Intro to Sketch Comedy class
The class will be 8 weeks long and will focus on the fundamental principles of writing short comedic scenes with a strong premise, dynamic characters, dialogue, and in a fun and supportive environment. Classes will combine writing exercises, discussing sketch comedy concepts, watching and analyzing sketches, collaboration, and live reads to guide students from brainstorming a premise to a finished sketch. And at the end of the 8-week you and your classmate will put on a sketch show!
In class, you’ll learn the basics of what goes into sketch comedy and how to write it. You’ll also get direct feedback on your work and receive direction in staging, props, and costume elements. Please note that there will be some light homework, such as memorizing lines if you are cast in a piece, working on rewrites, printing out sketches you write, etc.
This class will involve bringing a notebook, pencil/pen, or laptop—your preferred method of writing and note-taking.
Taught by Kate Teichman. Kate has over 20 years experience writing, performing, and teaching theater, improv and sketch comedy. She has her BFA in theatre, later trained in Chicago at iO!, and after coming to the North East was a part of the sketch troupe Empire Revue in Providence for 10 years.
